The documentary Oficinas de Encadernação e Douração [Bookbinding and Gilding Workshops], directed by Fernando Carrilho, will premiere on June 4th at Teatro do Bairro. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Fernando Carrilho, Luís Martins, Carlos Carreto and João Dias.

This film gives voice to the artisans who, since the 1960s, have learnt the craft of bookbinding and gilding and settled in Lisbon’s neighbourhoods. Many of them come from the interior of the country and have moulded their lives around this work, which values the book as an artistic and sensory object. This documentary highlights the importance of this profession – today in danger of disappearing – and emphasises the urgency of preserving this intangible heritage.
