The exhibition No Reino de O’Neill [In the Kingdom of O’Neill] celebrates the 100th birthday of a poet who was one of those responsible for Portugal’s encounter with surrealism. The exhibition, curated by Joana Meirim, is on display at the National Library of Portugal from December 19th to March 8th, 2025.

Although Alexandre O’Neill has expressed reservations about the longevity of his work, time has shown that he is certainly one of the most unique voices in Portuguese literature.

This exhibition is not intended to cover all aspects of his creative activity, but rather to show some of the most significant moments in his intellectual career, using elements from his estate, donated to the National Library of Portugal by his family. In this way, a journey through different parts of Alexandre O’Neill’s work and life is proposed, seeking to reveal lesser-known dimensions of this author.
