The second session of the Fernando Pessoa and the English Culture seminar will take place on November 29th and will be broadcast live on Youtube.
In this session Maria do Céu Estibeira will present the lecture A presença de Shakespeare e de Walt Whitman na biblioteca particular de Fernando Pessoa [The presence of Shakespeare and Walt Whitman in Fernando Pessoa’s private library].
The presence of English-language authors in Fernando Pessoa’s private library is unquestionable evidence, which leads us to assume the influence of Anglo-American literature on Fernando Pessoa’s aesthetic and discursive production. Two authors who play an important role in the orthonymous and heteronymous work are William Shakespeare and Walt Whitman, who, for different reasons and at different times, entered the modernist poet’s personal library. This presentation aims to show some particular aspects in the works of Walt Whitman and William Shakespeare that may have influenced Pessoa’s writing, as well as presenting some themes such as the Bacon-Shakespeare heteronymic creation.
This seminar, organised by Nuno Ribeiro, aims to be a place for debate where scholars and specialists in the work of Fernando Pessoa can bring their contributions to elucidating the importance of English literature in the work of the Portuguese poet and thinker.
