The fifth session of the Fernando Pessoa and the English Culture seminar will take place on February 18th and will be broadcast live on Youtube.

The speaker for this session is Fabrizio Boscaglia with the communication Fernando Pessoa, Omar Khayyam e o Orientalismo em língua inglesa [Fernando Pessoa, Omar Khayyam and Orientalism in English].

This presentation addresses three interconnected topics: the reception of the poetry of the Persian author Omar Khayyam by Fernando Pessoa; the contextualisation of this reception in Fernando Pessoa’s intellectual biography and private library, with an emphasis on books belonging to Pessoa that deal with Persian and Islamic cultures, written by British and English-speaking Orientalists between the 19th and early 20th centuries; the representation of these cultures in the thought and work of Fernando Pessoa, in the light of a critical reflection on Orientalism in contemporary Portuguese culture.
