Fernando Pessoa and the English Culture VII

The seventh session of the Fernando Pessoa and the English Culture seminar will take place on April 24th and will be broadcast live on Youtube.

This session’s speaker is Nuno Amado, who will present a paper entitled Um poeta em processo de naturalização: observações sobre Alexander Search [A poet in the process of naturalisation: observations on Alexander Search].

In addition to being an authorial name responsible for much of the poetic production in English by the young Fernando Pessoa, Alexander Search’s name also appears among the members of a gentlemen’s club created in 1904, whose exploits were compiled in a book entitled Ultimus Joculatorum. In this presentation, I intend to show how his association with some of the other gentlemen in this club affected Search’s personality and contributed, perhaps decisively, to his lack of productivity from 1909/1910 onwards. Among other curiosities from this phase of Pessoa’s career, I am interested in discussing the coincidence, which is hardly noted by Pessoa’s critics, between Search’s abandonment of poetry in English and Pessoa’s growing dedication, from the same period onwards, to poetry in Portuguese.

The seminar is organised by Nuno Ribeiro. Meeting poster here.
