Abstract: Ropicapnefma, or Mercadoria Espiritual [Spiritual Merchandise], is a dialogue written in the 16th. Century by the Humanist João de Barros. Four fictional characters – Reason, Time, Will, and Understanding – find themselves on the border between this world and the afterlife and participate in a discussion about the principles of the Christian and Catholic faith. This critical edition follows the standards of IELT’s (Institute for the Study of Literature and Tradition) Portuguese Dialogues collection and is complemented by a critical study, glossary, and index of proper names.
