Abstract: Author of one of the most vast works of Portuguese cinema, João Botelho found in literary texts and in the works of various visual artists the words and images that realised the destiny of the modern work of art, that is, that refused the paradigm of representation and the relationship between model and copy that it presupposes, and that devoted themselves to free experimentation, an experimentation aimed at achieving a fuller, more intense life. If the concept of image is transversal to literature and cinema, its incorporation can hardly be reduced to the homogeneity of a meaning in João Botelho’s films.
