The next session of the Fernando Pessoa and English Culture seminar will take place on September 26th and will be broadcast live on Youtube.

Bruno Barreiros is the guest speaker of this session, where he will present a paper titled A lógica do não no Livro do Desassossego: Melville em Pessoa ou o diálogo sem fim [The Logic of No in the Livro do Desassossego: Melville in Pessoa or the Endless Dialogue]. Boredom, alienation and self-weariness have become, more than individual psychological characteristics or particular existential dispositions, the true way of being of contemporary Western societies. As is often the case, poets were early in signaling these realities and in the diagnosis they made of these phenomena. This work will seek to establish a dialogue between Bartleby, the scrivener, and Bernardo Soares, the assistant bookkeeper, exploring the conceptual affinities that permeate the writing of Fernando Pessoa and Herman Melville with regard to these aspects. Special attention will be given to the concepts of boredom and alienation.
