Nuno Ribeiro was one of the researchers hired under the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus (CEEC), financed by FCT, with the project Fernando Pessoa’s English Heteronyms.
The researcher will develop his project at IELT and investigate Fernando Pessoa’s English personalities, creating an online database with all the documents of the Portuguese author’s English Heteronyms. Among the various heteronymous literary characters created by the poet are a multitude of English fictional authors, the result of the education Pessoa received in Durban, South Africa, where he lived for most of his childhood and adolescence, between 1896 and 1905.
Taking all these aspects into account, Nuno Ribeiro’s research project will be divided into two phases. The first will focus on the “pre-heteronymic” period, collecting, transcribing and publishing the works of English fictional literary personalities created by Pessoa before 1914. The second phase will focus on the heteronymic period, i.e. the collection, transcription and publication of the English heteronymous personalities created after 1914. A facsimile digital edition entitled “Fernando Pessoa – Heterónimos ingleses” [Fernando Pessoa – English heteronyms] will be created on the Modernismo: Virtual Archive of the Orpheu Generation project website.
In order to kick off this project, the first session of the seminar “Fernando Pessoa and the English Culture” will be held in October 25th.
