IELT hosts the research project The Golden Age of the Romancero: Echoes of traditional ballads in Medieval and Early Modern Spanish Literature (GOLDEN-Rom), by Nicolás Asensio Jiménez, funded through a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship.
The main objective of GOLDEN-Rom is to study the interpolation of novels in Spanish literature of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. It articulates with the IELT project RELIT-Rom: Literary revisions: the creative application of ancient ballads (15th-18th centuries) which aims the same purpose in Portuguese literature.
The goal of the association of GOLDEN-Rom and RELIT-Rom projects is to constitute a critical archive of testimonies of novels in Peninsular literature between the 15th and 17th centuries, and of the complex and multifaceted effects produced by novelistic interpolations in new literary contexts. In this sense, it will contribute to the knowledge of the old erudite circulation of novels in the Peninsula and to a renewed reading of the works that integrated the verses of the ballads.
GOLDEN-Rom’s starting point is the collection of 2,000 quotes and allusions to novels made by the Spanish philologist María Goyri, which is kept at the Fundación Ramón Menéndez Pidal. María Goyri was inspired by the work done by Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcelos in Romances Velhos em Portugal (initially published between 1907 and 1909), which contains several hundred references to novels in Portuguese literature. Goyri’s inventory remains unpublished and needs revision, expansion and updating. To this end, GOLDEN-Rom proposes to:
1) catalogue in the online database previously implemented within the RELIT-Rom project each reference to novels identified in Spanish literature by Goyri and later specialists;
2) analyse the creative use of quotations and allusions to novels by Spanish writers and musicians of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries;
3) study the differences and similarities in the use of these poetic materials by Portuguese and Spanish writers, comparing the inventories of Goyri, Vasconcelos and the contributions of later scholars.
GOLDEN-Rom is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program through the Marie Skoldowska-Curie Grant (nº 101029346). Researcher Nicolás Asensio Jiménez is responsible for its development and is supervised by Teresa Araújo, the researcher responsible for RELIT-Rom. It is based at IELT – NOVA FCSH, as this unit develops relevant studies on Romanceiro at the international level.
